Looking for a Euphonium for my son who has begun playing baritone recently. Wondering if I should be looking at the 4-valve non-compensating model or at the 3-valve compensating model. I'm not quite sure how it all works; what are the limitations, advantages, etc. for a beginning student. I'll hang up and listen!. Intonation on the 4th valve in a compensating system is generally better than in a non-compensating, but the only benefit otherwise would be using your index finger for 4th as opposed to a pinky (which can be useful for fast-moving technical passages in the mid-low register).

I think euphonium players are the only ones who seem to know how the compensating system works. Tuba players have the tradition of 5 valves to comensate for low note intonation problems and see those type of instruments as being superior..
