A wrestler must take this 2lb allowance if they plan on bumping up a weight, regardless of if they have achieved the scratch weight. Ex. After January 1st, if a wrestler weighs 107.9 the wrestler cannot wrestle at 120. If that wrestler has not achieved scratch at 106, they are only eligible for the 113-weight class in that meet.. A wrestler qualifies for a weight class at the nationals by either making scratch weight one time prior to the qualifying tournament (must be allowable by descent plan on that date) or can qualify by making scratch plus growth allowance one time before the qualifying tournament (descent plan must allow scratch plus growth that date).
Before they hit the mat, wrestlers face the painful task of losing a lot of weight in a very short time.. Because of all the variables at this level of youth wrestling, the IESA made the decision in 2009 to require all wrestlers to meet "scratch" weight for all weigh-ins and do away with any type of weight allowances that wrestlers at the high school level receive.
