Re: Force 120 problem Mercury "upgraded" the reed valves from Chrysler's metal design to their own composite. Force engines cold sneeze and it cracks them. That's why pre-mercury engines last forever if you take care of them and post-mercury engines will blow up if you look at them wrong.. Re: 120 force mercury outboard engine starting problems The flywheel, a stator and a small square rectifier make up the charging system. Not sure the exact location of the stator but believe it to be under the flywheel. The rectifier is bolted on the side of the power head. As for speed, everything is relative.

I don't know much about it (nothing really) except for the fact that Mercury has a great reputation. The guy says he's had no problems except for the hot wire coming loose at one time..
