push forward once (activated auto high beam) push forward again (activates forced high beam) pull back to disable the high beam mode and this will also disable auto high beam mode. The little green A in the headlight will now be gone but your selection is still set to auto lights.. Auto high beams and auto headlights work hand in hand. There is no way to use auto headlights without having auto highs. I really don't like this myself. But I did find a sort of trick. If you leave the headlight switch in the off position your headlights will come on when you put it in gear.
