Assuming it really is an intake air filter, and not something related to a crankcase breather valve.

Use kerosene or any recommended lubricant to clean the filter's foam element (engine oil can also be used) and allow excess fluid to drop off. Leave the filter overnight to dry before replacing it. If you're unable to clean the filter, replace it with a new one. Squeeze the element the next day to remove excess oil as this can attract dust.
