It points in the direction of the torque But -- what if we aren't given a nice picture or diagram showing all the objects and forces? Suppose that instead, we are given both the radius r and force F as VECTORS. In order to compute the torque produced by these inputs, we need to turn to a new mathematical tool: the cross product.. For torque we need to draw the entire object and draw forces at the locations of their application. This is known as the extended force diagram, which needs to contain all the force vectors at their locations, the pivot or the point of reference from which torques are calculated, and all the distances marked from the pivot to each force.

The magnitude of the torque can be obtained by measuring the mass suspended from the balancing arm, calculating its gravitational force and then multiplying this by its measured effective lever arm. After all torques have been calculated a torque vector diagram can be constructed and the equilibrium condition checked.. While r and F are vectors, torque is also a vector quantity. The equation above will help us calculate the magnitude of the torque, but a vector diagram (like the diagram above) will help us determine the direction of the torque.
