Donovan was a subordinate mercenary of Gambino. He was murdered by Guts after he gave Gambino three silver coins in order to rape Guts.. In the ensuing battle, Guts took revenge on Donovan by shooting him in the back with a crossbow to simulate an enemy attack before attacking him with his sword, demanding to know who had sold him out. Guts eventually kills Donovan and he dies a horribly embarassing death, teaching Guts his first lesson in revenge. But Donovan left an impact on Guts that he doesn't acknowledge until a dangerous moment.. Guts' inability to accept intimacy stems directly from Donovan's assault. Guts did get his revenge, however, as he later killed Donovan with his crossbow during a battle.
