Im currently replaying KCD in anticipation of KCD 2. I just finished the mission "A Needle in a Haystack" by the book so to say, up until the ending. If you speak to Radzig before the entering the monastery and becoming a monk, you will have the option to arrest Pious, bringing him to the Rattay bailiff. I always thought this was "the canon ending", even though it seemed to me to a little.. This is how you complete A Needle in a Haystack Quest without killing Pious. You can let him go at the end or turn him in to the Bailiff and do it the way Radzig wanted.
