Salt water tends to ride up the Eastern Shore side of the Bay. This has to do with deflection as the Earth turns and the fact that most of the fresh water is dumped into the Bay from the Western Shore Rivers.. The Chesapeake Bay (/ ˈtʃɛsəpiːk / CHESS-ə-peek) is the largest estuary in the United States. The bay is located in the Mid-Atlantic region and is primarily separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Delmarva Peninsula, including parts of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and the state of Delaware.

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States, stretching about 200 miles and covering a watershed of over 64,000 square miles. It is a unique ecosystem where freshwater from more than 150 rivers, including the Susquehanna, Potomac, and James Rivers, mixes with saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean.. The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary —a partially enclosed body of water where fresh water from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean. About half of the water in the Bay comes from salt water from the Atlantic Ocean. The other half drains into the Bay from its enormous 64,000-square-mile watershed.
