I'm sorry but it won't really matter. The VMU will eat your batteries all the same regardless of brand. Or if you're looking for alternatives, check out the VM2 project that's currently nearing completion. Either way, it's been fun to see more love for the VMU lately!

The Dreamcast uses a soldered-in, rechargeable battery to store the console's date and time settings.. Stick to ML2032 and make sure your charger is designed for them too! As far as extending the battery life is concerned, remove the VMU from the controller when the console is switched off as the batteries drain more quickly if the VMU is left inside. It helps a little but unfortunately the VMU does still chew through batteries pretty quickly.
