The 40-foot-tall Man is ignited Sunday night, Sept. 6, 1998, to signal the end of the week-long Burning Man Festival held on the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nev.. In 1998, the BLM prepared an environmental impact statement that would have limited the number of annual visitors to Black Rock Desert. Burning Man organized a public response and persuade the BLM to drop the approach, allowing the event to continue.
